Austin Dog-Friendly List - lots of info about Austin events, leash-free parks, restaurants, etc. Please read "Mouse's Guide to Socializing" for reminders about taking your dog out in public.

Check out these informative articles and websites on the hype/truth about current fads in dog training: The Animal Behavior Network has a listing of articles under "Do Your Homework on Gentle Methods Trainers - Reputable Behaviorists and Dog Trainers Speak Out."  American Humane Society Challenges Dog Whisperer Techniques and Paws University "4Paws University encourages dog owners to look beyond the television show and learn how to achieve these goals through more practical methods.  This article will explore the methods that claim to be based in dog psychology and will try to separate fact from marketing." Also, here's a link to an Op-Ed piece that was published recently in the New York Times.

Dog Training:

The training in the articles and videos below can be done with or without using a clicker, so they're helpful to anyone who's interested in a better trained dog. Just remember, even if you don't use a clicker, you can use a "mark word" such as "Yes" for the same purpose. The clicker or the mark word tells the dog exactly what he did to earn reinforcement (such as food, toys, etc.) so that the behavior will be more likely to occur in the future. In the beginning class, Becky will explain more about using the clicker or a mark word to "tell" the dog what behavior you are reinforcing.

Susan Garrett's "Say Yes Dog Training" - some important training reminders. Also click on "Articles" for info on Creating a Motivating Toy, Recalls, etc. that are very important for agility.

The BOOK of TRAINING LEVELS by Sue Ailsby (sue.eh@dragonflyllama.com) - an excellent, detailed online clicker training program for people training on their own. It is for both pet dogs and dogs getting ready for ANY type of dog sport. She also has a Yahoo Group called Training Levels to support the program. From her Introduction: "...a great competition dog requires THE SAME skills as a great pet. How far a trainer goes toward perfecting those behaviours is entirely up to him. ...The BASIC skills, however, are exactly the same, and that's what this book is about...I'm confident that a Level Six dog is a month away from ANY first-level competition title, because she has ALL the unwritten behaviours and many of the written ones down pat. That month is for teaching skills specific to the competition, but the important skills of concentration, teamwork, willingness and ability to learn, looking for results, and understanding that to get what she wants she must figure out what you want and give it to you – these skills are already firmly installed."
